Six former school friends gather for a weekend escape and reunion but instead of catching up and having fun, they're stranded on a remote island and it's clear that something sinister is going on。 I loved the setting of the island with the lighthouse but the six friends didn't have clear enough personalities for me to keep them all straight and I found the dialogue and the characters to be clunkily composed。 The action didn't really heat up until the last third。 That said, it was an enjoyable es Six former school friends gather for a weekend escape and reunion but instead of catching up and having fun, they're stranded on a remote island and it's clear that something sinister is going on。 I loved the setting of the island with the lighthouse but the six friends didn't have clear enough personalities for me to keep them all straight and I found the dialogue and the characters to be clunkily composed。 The action didn't really heat up until the last third。 That said, it was an enjoyable escape read。 。。。more

The Weekend Escape was painfully formulaic to start, but it did get more in its element when the characters were more explored and tensions began to rise。 There is still a fun guessing game to be explored with the whodunit plot, which was what held my interest。

What a gripping, mind-blowing, engrossing page turner! Wow! The Weekend Escape is the story of a girls weekend gone horribly wrong。 The overall story is interesting and had some good plot points, but there are numerous inconsistencies that made it difficult, at times, to buy into。 The grown women, friends when teenagers, meet at an island for a weekend of outdoor adventures - climbing, etc。 They are alternately referred to as the best of friends, and complete strangers who haven't really spoken much in the 10 years since they were teenagers。 I couldn't g The Weekend Escape is the story of a girls weekend gone horribly wrong。 The overall story is interesting and had some good plot points, but there are numerous inconsistencies that made it difficult, at times, to buy into。 The grown women, friends when teenagers, meet at an island for a weekend of outdoor adventures - climbing, etc。 They are alternately referred to as the best of friends, and complete strangers who haven't really spoken much in the 10 years since they were teenagers。 I couldn't get a handle on their friendships at all due to the conflicting stories。 There isn't much character study, but that's okay as this is all about the ominous tone of the weekend and all the misadventures that befall them。 The right tone is set - one of isolation and desperation to get off that island。 The story moves right along, and I was entertained enough to keep reading。 It became clear early on who the culprit is, so there isn't much mystery。 The ending is abrupt and ambiguous in a way that doesn't really make sense, and it honestly sort of ruined the whole book。 With a different ending this had promise, despite the flaws。 Thanks NetGalley 。。。more

*Review of the audio bookI wanted to love this book, as the premise sounded delicious。 I'm always drawn to stories about stuff like this。 But for some reason, it just never grabbed me。 It's probably because I wasn't wild about the characters。 Most of them seemed cold and self-absorbed, and not like the kinds of friends I'd ever want。 At times they were downright bitchy, and everyone just acted like that was acceptable, normal behavior。 In the moments when they'd reminisce about old times, I had *Review of the audio bookI wanted to love this book, as the premise sounded delicious。 I'm always drawn to stories about stuff like this。 But for some reason, it just never grabbed me。 It's probably because I wasn't wild about the characters。 Most of them seemed cold and self-absorbed, and not like the kinds of friends I'd ever want。 At times they were downright bitchy, and everyone just acted like that was acceptable, normal behavior。 In the moments when they'd reminisce about old times, I had a hard time believing they were close friends。 They all seemed like frenemies rather than soul sisters。 There were a few moments where I was totally engaged with the story though, and those moments were enthralling。 The narration was stellar。 Sarah Lambie nails all the different characters believably。 I'd give it a listen, especially if you like slow-building suspense。 There are many twists and turns, and the author keeps you guessing about the identity of the killer with an expert hand。 I'd listen to another book by Bennett。 。。。more

Chilling!Who can you trust? Can you trust your old friends, your best friends, when you are all reunited on an island for a climbing venture? When one gets hurt do you still trust them? When things get worse who can you believe? Who can you trust? This is a good read。

It seems like I've read a lot of novels this year about a group of old friends who get together for a weekend retreat or vacation or wedding。 I'd put this one somewhere in the middle of the pack。 The plotline is about six women who were once close friends, but haven't gotten together for ten years。 In the past they used to enjoy hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, etc。, so Juliet arranges for them to all go to a remote island whose only inhabitant is a park warden who takes care of a bird observat It seems like I've read a lot of novels this year about a group of old friends who get together for a weekend retreat or vacation or wedding。 I'd put this one somewhere in the middle of the pack。 The plotline is about six women who were once close friends, but haven't gotten together for ten years。 In the past they used to enjoy hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, etc。, so Juliet arranges for them to all go to a remote island whose only inhabitant is a park warden who takes care of a bird observatory。 The group is scheduled to spend their weekend in a bunkhouse and enjoy the great outdoors。 Unfortunately, Mother Nature has other ideas, and although it's August, their arrival is greeted by strong, cold winds and rain。 Personally, I wouldn't have even made my way off the boat that delivered them to this bleak island。Right off the bat, the group gets off to a very rough start。 They are taking turns abseiling down a cliff next to a non-functioning lighthouse。。 Juliet sails down, but the other five struggle。 When the last one down, Amanda, takes her turn, the rope breaks and she falls the last twenty feet or so, badly injuring her leg。 When the others check the rope, they see that it was severed。 But the island is supposed to be deserted so who could have done it? Maybe there actually is someone else on the island? Nonetheless, the group heads to the bunkhouse to find a phone or radio so they can contact the Coast Guard and get help。 What they find is a desolate bunkhouse with no electricity and no heat! Moreover, once they find the park warden, she informs them that her radio has been broken for a couple of weeks and she doesn't know how to fix it。 This is a thriller, so of course the group is stranded with no way to get help, and their boat ride back isn't due for another two days。 And then one of the group is found dead, and things go from bad to worse。I liked that this weekend getaway took place in such an desolate area instead of some chic resort; it was very atmospheric。 I also liked that the characters were all women who had fallen out of touch with one another, but I did struggle to distinguish them。 On the downside, I thought the killer was really obvious very early on, which ruined some of the suspense for me。 I also felt that the ending felt a bit unresolved。 Overall, it was a decent read and a nice change of pace。My thanks to NetGalley and One More Chapter/Harper Collins for providing me an advance copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Well, add in a brewing storm, an immediate injury, and a murder and it sounds like you have the makings for a weekend of doubt and fear。 How well do these friends really know each other? Especially after all these years?Lyndsey, Bobbie, Val, Sonia, Amanda and Juliet met and became friends in high school。 They bonded through their shared love of outdoor activities。 They frequently took camping trips and were joined by Amanda's older sister Cherry, who taught the girls the ins and outs of climbing。 Devastatingly, Cherry passed away one night when thy were out drinking together。 After that incident, the girls seemed to drift apart。 Juliet (maximum Type A personality) tried unsuccessfully to plan several reunions prior to this one - but due to everyone's differing schedules, it never worked out。 She was keen on them all visiting the deserted island that her family had camped at when she was younger。 The only way on the island is by boat, and even that has to be planned just right。 Several of the girls are only on this trip now because they feel guilty about not staying close with the group。 To say that they are less than thrilled to be attempting the same activities they did when they were much younger and more agile would be accurate。 Once they get to the island and see their rustic lodging, they are even more dismayed to be on this trip。Each of the women has her own challenges to deal with; one is in the middle of a breakup, one suspects she is pregnant with a man she was having an affair with, one is in a dire financial situation, one struggles with mounting health issues and one is still dealing with the devastating loss of her sister。 They are each hoping to have a weekend away from thinking about their troubles。 Some of these hardships are known, and others have been hidden among the friends。 What the friends expect to be a weekend of girl time away from their normal lives, quickly turns into a nightmare that they are unable to escape from。 I pretty quickly was able to assess who was to blame, but wasn't 100% sure I was right。 The author kept the story intriguing with her ability to paint the scenes vividly。 I could feel the pelting rain, the extreme cold, and the fear of the darkness。 I enjoyed the story and the shifting blame。 It was difficult at first to keep the women straight in my mind, but soon enough their personalities were recognizable and it was much easier to picture each one。 It was a quick read as the circumstances kept me captivated and turning pages。 Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for the advance copy to read and review。 。。。more

This was a thriller of a book。 It was set in Scotland on a island, very remote with a lighthouse。 The group of friends decide to have a weekend away during the winter when one of their group is murdered。 This was intriguing and very atmospheric。 I could picture the island and the run down cottage and the rain lashing against the windows。 Brilliant。 My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review。

The Weekend Escape is about six old friends reconnecting on a weekend trip to an isolated island。 Their trip is supposed to be full of fun abseiling and outdoor activities, but almost immediately tragedy strikes with injury。From there, paranoia abounds and everyone is immediately suspicious of the others。 The pacing felt a little slow, but the interactions within the group were done well。A little predictable with an abrupt ending, The Weekend Escape was good but not great。
